Firm sprayed asbestos into river
→ March 6 2006
A specialist roofing company has been fined £3,500 for polluting a river with asbestos washings.
C&W Roofing of Hythe Quay, Colchester, pleaded guilty to disposing of waste from jet spray washings from a roof in Luton in the River Lee.
The prosecution was brought by the Environment Agency under the Water Resources Act.
Luton Magistrates’ Court heard a slurry containing asbestos fibres had worked its way into Luton’s sewage system.
Some of the liquid covering a grass verge had also dried out during the summer causing asbestos fibres to be released into the air.
The firm has also been ordered to pay nearly £900 in costs to the Environment Agency.
