MASS: Pleural plaque sufferers net up to £7,000

→ Published on 12 Jan 2006 at 10:32

Back in March 2005, the High Court told insurance companies that they must compensate pleural plaque sufferers up to £7,000 for anxiety caused by the disease.

This has now moved on, inasmuch as Norwich Union has appealed the decision claiming that pleural plaques are not an injury for which the courts should award compensation. The insurance company launched the appeal back in November, and we are still waiting for a judgment.

Pleural plaques are when the lining of the lung thickens as a result of exposure to asbestos. There are no harmful effects, but can cause people to become stressed at the thought of further, much more harmful effects of their asbestos exposure.

The Daily Telegraph estimates that up to 100,000 sufferers, as well as the big insurers, could be affected by the decision.

At the same time, victims’ groups are launching their own case to increase compensation for pleural plaques.
